I am sure with all the madness of Covid-19, most of us have not been able to celebrate our children's birthday the way we have wanted to. Originally I would have loved to throw him a big birthday party to celebrate with friends and family, but safety first. So instead we opt for a very small family celebration with a cake smash that Joshua thoroughly enjoyed. Luckily, we were still able to do Joshua's First Birthday Photoshoot, which I have been looking forward to for months!
Doing a Birthday Photoshoot was always a must on my to-do list for Joshua's first birthday. It is a big milestone, and I want beautiful photos to remember it by. Of course, with everything going on, I had to make sure the studio I chose was clean and hygienic. Luckily, I managed to find a LaVi Studio.
Why I Chose LaVi Studio
With so many photo Studios in Hong Kong, sometimes it is hard to choose which studio to go for. I chose LaVi Studio because I have always liked their work and they have great reviews. In fact, I have been following them for a while now, so I am very happy I got to work with them for Joshua's first birthday shoot.
Their photography style is light and airy, and I love their backdrops, props and wardrobe. Yes, you read correctly, they have a vast wardrobe of childrenswear to choose from. From pretty party dresses and dapper suits to Nordic style outfits, they have it all. I think this is such a great idea, as you don't have to worry or think about buying a new outfit for your baby just for a photo shoot. We didn't borrow any outfit for this shoot, only because my husband wanted to twin with Joshua, but otherwise, I would have loved to rade their wardrobe and play dress up with Joshua.
Another main factor why I chose LaVi Studio is because they have a great prop selection. (Really cute props!) From Cars, slides to ball pit pool, they pretty much have everything you can imagine and want for a cute photoshoot.
Our Experience at LaVi Studio
I am so please with our photos from LaVi Studio and we thoroughly enjoyed our photoshoot session. (Which is a big achievement considering my husband doesn't enjoy photoshoots!)
Situated in Sha Tin, LaVi Studio is very well decorated and presented. You can definitely see that the staff and owner take care and pride in the studio. When we arrived, we were greeted warmly by the staff, the backdrop was already set and we were shown where we could get change.
Once we were ready, they asked us, what songs Joshua likes to listen to, so they can create a more comfortable and familiar environment for him. (Which I thought was very thoughtful of them.)
As we had barely brought Joshua out since January and he hasn't met any new people recently, he pretty much froze on set. Which was quite funny and cute, but at the same time I didn't want all his photos to have the same blank expression. (Like this LOL)
Luckily they had different toys and props that Joshua can play with to help him get comfortable and have some fun. After 10 minutes or so, Joshua started to relax, so we were able to take some solo and family shots with him and have some fun.
Honestly, at the beginning of the shoot, I was getting slightly worried that we won't be able to get any nice shots because Joshua just froze and barely moved with the blankest expression. With a 30 minute session and 10 minutes for Joshua to warm up, I thought we would be lucky to even get one good shot. However, with their experienced photographer's skills and staff, we managed to get some amazing shots at the end, which I am super impressed and cannot be happier.
The staff was very professional and efficient, they had all the props ready and close by, so they can swap things in and out quickly, to ensure we made most of our time. At the end of the shoot, they set up a computer for us, so we can have a quick look at the shoot. Which I thought was brilliant.

Tips
Go to the studio at least 10 -15mins before the start of the shoot. So your baby can get familiar with the surrounding.
Bring dry snacks - I was so happy I bought some yogurt drop snacks for Joshua. That really helped him get in a better mood and made him smile. Bring snacks that are easy to eat and do not have crumbs. You want to keep the set as clean as possible.
Bring something along that your baby is familiar with. The studio will allow you to bring your own props, so if there is a teddy or comforter that your baby particularly loves, you can bring it with you so your baby will feel more relaxed and comfortable.
